Promote Bonding & Adhesion of Urethanes to Surfaces

Urethane primers are used to promote the bonding and adhesion of urethanes to surfaces. Most urethanes should be applied over a prepared primed surface for optimal results. We have developed special primers for a specific application. Our primers range in applications for concrete, metal, unpainted metal, as a tie coat to fiberglass parts, flooring, roof decking, pipeline, tank, and wood. Our primer 450 has been used in the application of our Speedliner™ Truck Bed liners for over 20 years. These primers can be applied with a brush, rollers, dipped or sprayed with a low-pressure sprayer. Any place adhesion to prepainted metal is desired.

Applications and Uses

  • Steel surfaces
  • Concrete and wood surfaces
  • Plastic surfaces
  • Polyurethane cured surfaces
  • Truck beds

Polyurethanes elastomers in general, require an adhesion promoting primer to form strong bonds to various substrates.

Primers are chosen based on the type of surface that will be bonded to the polyurethane. The primers are supplied in two forms:

  • as a two-component system where Component A & B are combined then the mixture is applied to the bonding surface
  • as a single component system where the material is applied with no mixing.

Better bonds can be made by roughing up the application surface with light sanding and cleaning with M.E.K.

Thinner coats of primer that are allowed to dry form stronger bonds than heavy applications

Specific Applications

Adhesion for Coated Metals

Primer 450 is a two-component urethane primer used to increase the adhesion of urethanes to painted metal surfaces, wood, (some plastic surfaces) or concrete. Primer 450 is required when installing our Speedliner 1000 spray on truck bed liner product into the cargo bed area of light-duty trucks or other painted metal surfaces. Primer 450 is also used as a bonding agent between new and old urethane coatings. It is applied by spraying, brushing or roller application. For best results, the surface should be cleaned, abraded and wiped with a solvent prior to Primer 450 application.

When recoating spray-on truck bed liners, Primer 450 must be used to bond new truck bed liner coating over existing spray-on truck bed liners. Cure time depends on temperature and relative humidity, Mix ratio 1:1 by volume, brush, roller or spray-on application. See Speedliner product page for complete information on our spray-on truck bed liner products. Primer 450 contains VOC solvents and is classified as flammable material, see material safety information.

Primer 45 Low VOC is similar to the Primer 450 but with reduced V.O.C’s (volatile organic content), specifically formulated to comply with California Low VOC Rule 1151.
Product Features:
  • 1:1 by Volume mixing ratio

  • Increases the adhesion of urethane elastomers to other elastomeric compounds or as a tie coat to fiberglass gel coats, fiberglass parts, and some metal surfaces.

High Performance Bonding for Concrete and Wood Surfaces

Primer 700 is a two-component urethane primer designed for use on concrete, wood and other porous substrates in coating applications where a solvent based primer cannot be used. Primer 700 is formulated to be used with fast cure (1 to 3 minute cure) plural application coatings over concrete; these are coatings which are spray applied through high pressure plural mixing/spraying equipment or the dual cartridge with static mixer type spray guns. A solvent free primer must be used with very fast curing coatings to prevent bubbling as solvents evaporate from surface. This primer should be allowed to full cure overnight before spray application of fast set coatings over it. Use this primer over concrete surfaces when spraying Speedliner series coatings. It also exhibits a low sensitivity to substrate moisture, leaving minimal bubbling when applied to damp surfaces. Mix 1:1 ratio by volume, brush, roller or spray-on application. Primer 700 contains no VOC solvents and is classified as non-flammable material, see material safety information. Primer 700 should NOT be used with our Speedliner 1000 spray-on truck bed liner product.
Product Features:
  • Concrete and wood primer for polyurethane and polyurea spray coatings.
  • Industrial flooring, roofing, decking, truck bed liners, pipeline and tank coatings.
  • Penetrates and seals the surface, leaving a smooth, pinhole and bubble-free coating.
