EC-5 is a very soft two component polyurethane polymer specifically formulated for the encapsulation and potting of electrical cables. EC-5 has excellent hydrolytic stability and electrical insulating properties.

EC-5 is especially designed for use in applications for splicing or repairing industrial cables. It is well suited for a wide variety of environments subject to extreme cold, water immersion and mechanical wear and abrasion. Optimum performance can be expected when EC-5 is applied to prepared cables in a dry environment. In most applications no primer is required however Primer 450 or Primer EMC-3 is recommended where adhesion is a problem

Application and Mix Ratio

Condition the liquid components (A & B) to 72˚F before combining. Warmer temperatures with significantly shorten the working time and colder temperatures with lengthen times. In a clean plastic container, weigh 95 grams of the Component A (Clear) and 100 grams of the Component B (Blue). This material may also be combined at 1 part Component A to 1 Part Component B by volume. Start mixing immediately after A & B components are added to the beaker. Use a clean flat spatula taking care to scrape the sides and bottom of the container to include all of the unmixed material. Mix for 30 seconds, Mixture should be an evenly mixed with no “lines” of unmixed Clear or Blue. Pour mixture into prepared mold or connector.

For optimum results, application surfaces should be abraded and solvent cleaned (toluene) to remove any oil, grease and surface debris. Cleaning solvent should be allowed to fully dry before application is made. Never apply EC-5 over wet or damp surfaces.

Before combining Part A & B stir the Components B separately ensure an even color for the cured polymer. Measure out 1 part of the Component A (Clear) to 1 Part of the Component B (Transparent Blue) by volume into a clean plastic container. Carefully mix the liquids together using a flat spatula for mixtures of ½ gallon or less. For larger batches, use an electric drill and “jiffy” mixer. Avoid “whipping” in excessive air and take care to carefully scrape down the sides and bottom of the container to include the entire A and B components. The completed mixture should be an even color with no lines of blue or clear. Pour the mixed liquid into the prepared mold. Silicone mold release can be used to prevent adhesion to select surfaces. Liquids should form a firm gel in about 6 to 8 hours at 72˚F. Colder temperatures will lengthen working time while warmer temperatures will greatly shorten working and cure times. The Components A & B can be damaged by freezing. The Component A should be completely liquid (no clumps) before combing it with the Component B for best results.

Storage and Shelf Life

EC-5 is shipped from the factory in sealed containers. Opened containers of the liquids components should be purged with dry nitrogen and reseal after each use to prevent contamination with atmospheric moisture. EC-5 has a shelf life of six months when stored in a dry place in unopened containers that is protected from direct sunlight and moisture at temperatures between 60˚F and 80˚F

Shipping Class: Class 55 Non-hazardous
